Opening Reception
for
Angie Reed Garner
Friday, July 3
5:00-800pm
Combining saturated color and a symbolic narrative of creative and intellectual freedom, political self-understanding, and culture shock, Garner’s paintings were completed during two years of living in Lahore, Pakistan and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Developed in the space that expands when someone leaves their home country, the series, as well as expats themselves are resident outsiders: less easily part of “home”, but not entirely integrated into their new surroundings. From Garner’s perspective, images possess great power, and yet not all images can be understood by all viewers, because in certain cases, too much is simply unfamiliar. Though she doesn’t think she could paint anything that would not be at home somewhere, Garner recognizes that certain images cannot be exhibited in Islamic countries without giving offense, and therefore are more at home in Germany or the U.S. Expat, therefore, offers a rare opportunity to view a selection of Garner’s recent works not often, or at all, displayed outside of her studio.
Exhibit runs through August 15, 2009.

I have to ruminate over this drawing a bit longer.

It always lasts for just a moment and comes off as coldness. I don't know if it's strength, sadness, or resign. I suddenly feel like there's so much to say and no one to say it to.
( unrelated )
We are the rain. The same quaking beat of thunder.
It is the same thing over and over.
I feel a bit of the blade coming again, that wicked strength.
I keep thinking of birds and turning into swallows, with their v-shaped tails.
Everything has a current.
Even the pavement moves.

The poet came home last night. In dreams she came,
longing for homefires to be burning.
Instead, a rattling empty cage
and the smell of cinnamon ... and she stood, armed
with books and papers and slow-turning ceiling fans.
She asked, "What am I to make of this place?
What am I to make?"
After the Getty re-opened in 2006 after a long renovation, I've been meaning to get my butt over there.
We went yesterday - a beautiful day near the ocean :)
( creepy/cool/overload )
I have created a new community for Artfire members, aptly called
artfiresellers. Feel free to join if you are an Artfire seller or simply interested in selling on Artfire in the future.
I went through and tagged all my entries. I don't know if it really matters, but I thought it wouldn't hurt anything.
I'll probably sort through a box of craft supplies I picked up at the flea market yesterday. Maybe take some pictures of the other junk I picked up. A few dolls, a few miniature figurines. Little deer and squirrels. I have a weakness for woodland animals.
Watching the birds at the new birdfeeder outside. Gold finches and sparrows mostly, a few red-winged blackbirds too. One sparrow is painstakingly picking up one kind of seed and tossing it from the feeder to the ground as she eats. A food critic.
Home again, home again. It was a fun evening for which I provided a lot of the entertainment, and mostly in good ways.
Morning, world. Crisis and coup in Honduras. At home, things are wonderfully calm. The world is full of upheaval right now. #Honduras
Holy cow. It was not busy at all, then was busy as heck with shopping and cooking. Entering a slight laze-phase again, thankfully.
Vegetating so damn hard. I'd play Runes if Elena wasn't using the computer for video.

Occasionally, I sit back and ponder the animal non-animal that is facebook. The really bizarre requests from 1. old flames (rreeeeallllly old, poorly ended ones) 2. people I'm sure I know somehow (university I think) but they didn't take the time to explain who they were and why now they wanted access into my life.
Denied.
Happy:
replaced Bazil Broketail, bought Tomcat in Love, a volume of 1999's best poetry (ten years I thought, fitting), a slim volume of short AR Ammons poems (as much as I did not enjoy Garbage, and an astrology book focusing on moon signs from 1977.
When I got home my cat purred and purred and purred until he'd clearly had enough.
Playing more Runes of Magic this morning. Working on craft skills.
Still playing this dumb game. Crafting hooks me every fucking time.
There is a party tonight.
